What IS "Kamate"?

The "Ka Mate" is a traditional haka {dance} of the Māori people of New Zealand, which celebrates life over death. The dance is performed as a group, with vigorous synchronized movements, including the

stomping of the feet

and rhythmically shouted accompaniment.

Because we are so aligned with Les Mills of New Zealand, we wanted our company name to express a connection to New Zealand culture. We were thrilled to discover the Ka Mate because of its expression of life, joy and inspiration.

We also see strong parallels between the haka and our exercise classes. They are both rhythmic rituals performed in groups directed by a "shouting" leader. They employ all parts of the body as instruments with the goal of preparing for battle. In our case, the battle for a happy, healthy life.
